The Rhins of Galloway are unusual in that we have several outstanding golf courses within a short distance of each other. Moreover, four of our local courses (Portpatrick Dunskey, Stranraer Golf Club, Wigtownshire County Club and Newton Stewart Golf Club) are the four courses played over in the annual Galloway Golf Classic. This is an event which is rapidly gaining ground as one of THE premier golfing events in southern Scotland. The competition is held in September. Limited to only 200 players. Even if you don't have an entry in for this year (2008) why not come along and watch the matches whilst staying at one of our cottages in Portpatrick? Then enjoy a few rounds on a choice of courses yourself! Enquiries please do not hesitate to phone (+44) 01776 810555
We would be pleased to help you plan a golfing holiday for
you and your party, either here in Galloway or at one of our Spanish properties.
In Porpatrick we have the famous cliff-top 18-Hole course of Dunskey, with its stunning views across the Irish Sea and rolling countryside. This is a challenging 18 hole course, Handicap Certificate required. White Markers: SSS 69 5913 Yards, Yellow Markers: SSS 67 5543 Yards, and Red Markers: SSS 71 5125 Yards. This is a great course, with some tough Par 5's - especially the 3rd with its blind approach. The 13th, meanwhile, provides stunning views over the cliffs to Ireland, but can have a difficult sea breeze to help you into the gorse! The 10th is an interesting play too, requiring an accurate tee shot but with a chance of a birdie. On the eastern side of the Rhins of Galloway, on the shores of Loch Ryan, is situated the 18-Hole Stranraer Golf Course. Designed by 5 -Times Open Champion James Braid. A demanding but enjoyable 6308 Yards SSS 70 course with some challenging shots (the 3rd Hole crosses a Burn no less than three times, for example). Afterwards, relax in the Clubhouse - built in 1994. Facilities include: a lounge and bar with panoramic views, a dining room offering a range of meals and snacks, TV lounge, visitor locker rooms, Ladies' secure handbag lockers, showers, and the usual golfing supplies. Contact Galloway Golfing holidays to arrange a golf package here for you and your party. Two miles out of Portpatrick on the road to Stranraer is the 18-Hole Lagganmore Golf Course. An Course & Hotel open to non-residents. The course offers a challenging game enhanced by great views across the countryside towards the Irish Sea. The 7th Green lays claim to being one of the best Par 5's in Wigtownshire. (The 9th has been described as one of the most picturesque!) The Clubhouse offers a Bar and Dining Facilties. Slightly further afield, near Glen Luce, (about 8 miles east of Stranraer) we have the 18-Hole Wigtownshire County Golf Club. Set alongside the shores of Luce Bay, this coastal course offers 18 holes over 5847 Yards and an SSS. 68. The play here has an added factor; a good sea breeze! Described on the UK Golf Guide website as "...a true links course" and "...you have to play this course to appreciate its qualities".
